Connecting Microsoft Copilot to your brand guidelines

The Microsoft Copilot MCP integration connects your Guidelines brand data to Microsoft 365 Copilot using the Model Context Protocol. You add the Guidelines MCP server to an agent in Microsoft Copilot Studio, and your team can then ask that agent about your brand colors, fonts, logos, and Guide pages.

Note: You need access to Microsoft Copilot Studio to create the agent. Sharing it with your whole organization needs admin approval.

To connect Microsoft Copilot to your brand guidelines:

1. Access the integration in Guidelines

  • Navigate to your brand dashboard in Guidelines
  • Click on Integrations in the sidebar
  • Find Microsoft Copilot in the AI Tools section
  • Click to open the integration setup guide

2. Add the Guidelines MCP server in Copilot Studio

  • In Copilot Studio, open or create an agent
  • Go to Tools → Add a tool → New tool → Model Context Protocol
  • Fill in the server details:
    • Server name: Guidelines
    • Server description: Read-only access to your Guidelines brands: colors, fonts, logos and Guide pages.
    • Server URL: https://mcp.guidelines.site/mcp

3. Choose authentication

  • Set Authentication to OAuth 2.0
  • Set Type to Dynamic discovery. Copilot Studio registers itself with Guidelines, so there's no client ID or secret to enter.
  • Select Create, then Next

4. Connect your Guidelines account

  • Select Create a new connection and sign in with your Guidelines account
  • Select Add to agent
  • Leave Credentials to use set to End user credentials, so each person only sees the brands their own Guidelines account can access
  • Check that generative orchestration is turned on in your agent's settings. Copilot Studio only uses MCP tools when it's on.
  • Our MCP reads data from your brands, and does not have write access

5. Publish to Microsoft 365 Copilot

  • Publish the agent
  • Go to Channels → Teams and Microsoft Copilot
  • Make sure Make agent available in Microsoft Copilot is selected, then select Add channel
  • Use Availability options to share the agent with your team or submit it for admin approval

6. Start using your brand system

In Microsoft 365 Copilot, type @ and select your agent, then ask about your brand. You'll be prompted to sign in with Guidelines the first time. Try these example prompts:

  • "What fonts does [your brand name] use?"
  • "What are the hex codes for our primary brand colors?"
  • "Summarize our logo usage guidelines"

Available tools and data

The Guidelines MCP server provides your Copilot agent with the following tools:

  • search_brands - Search for brands by name or organization name

Guidelines Tools

  • search_guidelines - List or search Guides by name
  • get_guidelines - Get all page resources for a specific Guide
  • get_guidelines_page - Get a single Guide page as markdown, for clients that don't support resources

Your Copilot agent can also list and read individual Guide pages as resources:

  • URI Pattern: guidelines://{domain}/{slug}
  • Format: Markdown content from your Guide pages
  • Access: List all pages and read specific page content

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues connecting:

  1. Check that the server URL is exactly https://mcp.guidelines.site/mcp
  2. Check that generative orchestration is turned on for your agent
  3. Verify you're signed into Guidelines with an account that has access to the brand
  4. Check that your Guidelines subscription is active
  5. If your agent doesn't appear in Microsoft 365 Copilot, check that an admin has approved it
